At present the council will want to know why you house was repossessed. If you reveal to the council that you ran up too much debt against your house, couldn't afford to pay it back and as a result caused the bank to have to repossess, the council may see it as your own fault. There will probably be many more deserving cases seeking council accommodation ahead of you, you could be at the end of a very long list.
If you can avoid repossession you should at all costs. Once you have been repossessed in the UK nothing ever comes easy again. You will struggle to get credit on anything for many year. The bank repossessing you may force you into bankruptcy. So no home, no car, no chance of credit, no easy way out. Any way of stopping repossession will be a benefit and you will save your belongings, your credit rating avoid bankruptcy and recover your life quite quickly.
